This special 80-card set from the Frank H. Fleer Company honors Ted Williams,
"The Splendid Splinter." While other companies vied for Topps' exclusive player
rights, Fleer successfully secured Ted Williams, who, nearing the end of his
career, remained one of the best and most popular players.
Of particular note is Card #68, "Ted Signs for 1959," which pictures him signing
his contract. The photo also included Red Sox GM Bucky Harris, who was under one
of those exclusive deals with Topps at the time. This led to the card being pulled,
making it extremely scarce. Unfortunately, reprints of the card surfaced in the
1970s. This is widely considered the first baseball card to be
reprinted/counterfeited. Interestingly, the counterfeits were allowed to remain
on the market, so caution is advised when dealing with this card.
Cards were sold in both six-card and eight-card wax packs. For some reason,
the scarcer 8-card packs contained no gum.
1971 O-Pee-Chee BaseballAlso referred to as OPC or Topps Canada, most vintage OPC sets were near replicas of the Topps cards from that year. Exactly same in design they usually only differed with the addition of French to the backs and some fronts.To the benefit of collector's OPC made several changes in their 1971 set. The most obvious and useful was a complete redesign of the card backs and the addition of another player photo ! Additionly, over 20 cards were changed including the inclusion of what could be considered the first "Traded" cards. Another difference: Topps cards #202 and #289 were changed to allow the addition of 2 more Expos to the set. The 1971 OPC set is legendary for its short print run, estimated at perhaps just 5% of Topps’ Production. This issue is considered quite elusive, even in Canada. 1971 OPC/O-Pee-Chee Baseball checklist and prices

Series are groups of cards in an issue released together. Example: Series #1 (cards #1-100) are released in April; Series #2 (#101-200) released in July; and so on. This allowed kids to easier complete sets. A side-effect was the creation of scarce "High Numbers".
Short Print (SP) is a card printed in lesser quantity than other cards in the set. Recent short prints are often serially-numbered.
Team Set is a group of all the cards of players for a certain team.
Test Issue is a small printing by a card company to see if products are of interest to collectors. Some of Topps neatest items are "Test Issues" like 1956 Topps Pins & 1974 Topps Puzzles.
Tobacco Card is typically from the early 1900's and were issued with tobacco products, the most famous of which is the T-206 Honus Wagner card.
Traded/Update Set is a set issued after the original issue primarily featuring rookies or players who were traded since the original issue came out.
Trimmed Card is a card reduced in size mostly to hide damaged edges or corners. Trimmed cards have very little value compared to the un-trimmed version. In some cases such as the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle, even trimmed cards can go for thousands. The most famous 'trimmed' card is the T206 Honus Wagner purchased by Wayne Gretzky. The card was actually too large before it was trimmed down to size.
Unauthorized Issue is a card release which is not licensed by the league, player's association or player.
Variation is a card printed by the manufacturer that differs in some way from the normal card.
Wax Pack is a generic term for a pack of cards. The "wax" came from a time when packs were sealed in wax paper wrappers. Today it is still used for packs even though they no longer use wax paper.
