One of the more interesting items in Topps 1970's baseball was the almost certain move of the Padres to Washington. Topps was so sure that they started printing the Padres cards identifying them as WASHINGTON NATIONALS. McDonald's founder Ray Kroc saved the Padres for San Diego where they are now thriving.
Topps had to chang all the Padres' lower series cards, creating many variations. The 'Wshington Nationals' variations are fairly scarce and now more in demand with a new team in Washington.
TOP ROOKIEs were Padres great Dave Winfield and Ken Griffey Jr's dad Ken Griffey Sr.

1956 Topps Football

After they acquired Bowman, Topps issued its first NFL licensed football set issuing (120) brightly colored cards. Team cards were a nice new addition to the earlier Bowman offerings. Also issued was a checklist and (5) special contest cards. Most of these special cards were either tossed away or sent in to win prizes making them quite difficult to find.
Like its early 1950's baseball issues, these cards measured in at 2-5/8" x 3-3/4", sligtly larger than the regular modern issued cards.
Each team had (9) player cards and the team card. To make the number of cards work with the card-sheet size, Topps printed all the cards twice on each sheet, EXCEPT the Washington Redskins and Chicago Cardinals who were short printed (single printed)and are more difficult to find. From the days when inserts were neat !!! 1966 Topps Rub-Offs have colorful, attractive pictures, which by rubbing the reverse side with a coin (quarters worked best), could be applied to surfaces like desks, books or walls. YEAH - A great item for kids - a HUGE nightmare for parents and teachers !!!

In 1961 Topps issued a similar item called "Magic Rub-Offs". There were 36 different in that set. Topps went way further with their 1966 issue of (120) rub-offs (100 players & 20 pennants). The rub-offs were inserts, one per 1966 Topps wax pack. The 2-1/6 inch by 3 inch rub-offs were printed in rolls of 20 different.

Apparently some kids placed rub-offs of certain players on their bats to help them hit like the player. I wish I would have known ... I could have used the help.

How long have sports cards been around ? (part 2)

The first important and mainstream basketball set was issued by Bowman in 1948. Other than a Topps set in 1957-58 and a 1961-62 Fleer set, there were no mainstream basketball sets issued until Topps started producing yearly sets beginning with their 1969-70 set featuring the rookie card of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who then went under the name of Lew Alcindor.

In hockey, there were a few sets issued in the 1910's and while O-Pee-Chee issued some sets in the 1930's, the real modern sets began in 1951 with the itroduction of Parkhurst's first set.

In racing, while cards go back as far as the early Indy car days of 1911, modern racing sets began in 1988 with the issues released by MAXX.
