1961 Fleer Baseball Cards

The 1961 Fleer baseball set contained 154 regular-sized cards honoring careers of Hall-of-Famers Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson, Lou Gehrig, Honus Wagner, Ted Williams and many lesser known old-timers.
Released in 2 series, the 2nd series cards #89-#154 are somewhat tougher to find.
Fleer was prevented from using current players by Topps' exclusive rights, so they issued their Baseball Greats set using retired players, managers, executives and the two league commissioners. Luckily Fleer had their own exclusive rights deal with Ted Williams, who quickly became the most in demand card in the set.
Unfortunately the weak card design and retired players made it a giant dud with kids and the product was not well received.
Cards were sold in five-cent packs and packaged with two special inserts; a logo team decal and team pennant sticker of past World Series champions.

More expensive auction items may have minimum or starting bids. Saves time rather than auction bids going up .25 at a time, taking many dozens of bids to reach even fractions of value.
Reserve Bid: "Reserve" auction bids come into play after an auction ends. If "Hammer" price is less than "Reserve" bid no sale. Not very auction bidder friendly.

1972 O-Pee-Chee Baseball

Also referred to as OPC or Topps Canada, most vintage OPC sets were near replicas of the Topps cards from that year. Exactly same in design they usually only differed with the addition of French to the backs and some fronts.
1972 OPC #465 Gil Hodges

Cards differed from their Topps versions mostly due to "Made in Canada", French/English and different colored backs. the sets, such as "Boyhood Photos" and "In Action" cards. Card #465 Gil Hodges is the only card differing significantly from its corresponding Topps card, which notes his April of 1972 death. First Time features were "Boyhood Photos" and "In Action" cards. The O-Pee-Chee cards can be distinguished from Topps cards by This was also the first year the cards denoted O.P.C. in the copyright line rather than T.C.G. There is one card in the set which is notably different from the corresponding Topps, Gil Hodges #465, which notes his death in April on the OPC card.

Baseball card collecting terms (part B)

Bazooka Bazooka Bubble Gum put baseball cards on the back of their boxes from 1959 thru 1971. Complete boxes and panels can get extremely costly. Most kids back then could not afford complete boxes of bubble gum at one making Bazooka cards quite scarce. I actually don't recall ever obtaining a Bazooka card directly from a box as a kid. Do you ???

Black Sox Scandal Name given to the the most famous scandal in baseball history after the 1919 Chicago White Sox versus the Cincinatti Reds World Series when 8 White Sox players were accused of throwing the series. Details have remained somewhat unclear. The players were acquitted of criminal charges but 8 players still received a lifetime ban from professional baseball including the All-Time great "Shoeless" Joe Jackson.

Blank-Back a card in which nothing is printed on the back. These cards are usually not in packs and are either "PROOF ISSUES" or were removed from the factory in some way.

Blanket a term used for collectibles in the 1910's made of fabric .

Border is the part of the card that surrounds the photo or image.

Bowman was a card manufacturer in the 1940's and 1950's that was bought out by Topps. In 1989 Topps started issuing cards using the Bowman brand.

Break a term used to indicate the opening of a set, pack, box or case.

Break Value is the total book value of each card added up individually. The break value of a set is usually way, way more than the value of the complete set.
